Blue Jackets

The Hawks lost their second consecutive game against one of the worst teams in the Western Conference when they fell 4-2 to the Blue Jackets on Sunday night at the United Center. It was their seventh defeat in 10 games, and instead of cruising into the playoffs, they are looking in their rearview mirror at the Predators and Red Wings, who are closing the gap in the Central Division.
What's worse is how bad the Hawks looked Sunday in front of a crowd of 22,043. They showed little emotion until the final moments and often played undisciplined hockey as they sought to rebound from an 8-3 shellacking by Columbus on Thursday night.

The owners -- if you believe them -- ARE losing money, hand over first. I truly don't think it's an ownership problem. Look at the contract extensions they've doled out to Nash, Vermette, Brassard. Mason and Voracek can be extended this season. Yes, it's a small market. Yes, they're a budget team, not a cap team. But they footed the bill for a club that was expected to win this season, and now it hasn't won. I wouldn't put that on ownership. I'd put it on the GM, the coaches and players. When Mason and Voracek get extension, and they reshuffle the deck this summer, the CBJ will be in the $52M-55M range. That should be enough for a very good hockey, especially with so many young players.

Jackets GM Howson is useless

The Columbus Blue Jackets waited until the final hour of the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday to deal forward Raffi Torres(notes) to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Nathan Paetsch(notes) and a second-round draft pick.

AP - Mar 3, 3:01 pm EST NHL Gallery The Blue Jackets also sent defenseman Milan Jurcina(notes), acquired from Washington along with forward Chris Clark(notes) earlier this season. back to the Capitals for a sixth-round draft pick.

Torres, who can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, scored 19 goals and added 12 assists for the Blue Jackets in 60 games this season. Paetsch is a journeyman blue-liner who has seven goals and 35 assists in 157 career NHL games.

This guy is Howson the worst GM in the entire NHL.
