Horton bluejacket

Horton acknowledged that his impending shoulder surgery will require a 4 to 6 month recovery. The shoulder was dislocated during the playoffs, but he mostly was able to play through it.
"I'm hoping for four months, of course," he said. "It's something we're going to get after early next week, get it scheduled and looked after. I'm ready to get it behind me."
Horton, 28, has played in 591 NHL games with Florida (422) and Boston (169) during a nine-season career. He's totaled 198 goals, 204 assists, 543 penalty minutes and a plus-57 rating. He'll wear No. 8 for the Blue Jackets after wearing No. 18 with the Bruins.

Can someone tell me why we would sign a player for 7 years and he can't play until January or after ,,,stupid.
