After more than 30 years of effort, the opportunity to make his belief reality presented itself with the NHL awarding a franchise to Columbus in 1997. To my mind, it is clear he was right in his vision. With the Blue Jackets and the Arena as the anchor, Nationwide Insurance has brought vibrancy to our downtown in the Arena District that simply wouldn't have happened without the team. That said, there is no question our on-ice performance is nowhere near what it needs to be. All of you are disappointed and many are angry. I and the entire Blue Jackets organization share these feelings. I thought as we approached mid-season at the All-Star break, it would be a good time to reflect on where we've been and offer some thoughts about how we go forward. We have taken actions and will continue our push to improve. Toward the end of last season, we did a thorough evaluation of our team's strengths and weaknesses. From there, a plan was developed balancing our needs against our tradable assets. During the summer, we believed we executed the plan well and took a good step forward. Most people seemed to agree and we were excited for the season to start. Unfortunately and surprisingly, we opened the season terribly and have struggled ever since. Disappointing is not a strong enough word. We began looking at why our team was not performing at an acceptable level very early this season and assessing where we are and where we want to go. We added Craig Patrick, an experienced and highly respected figure in the hockey community, as a senior advisor to assist in this endeavor. While this process is not complete, we have clearly defined our options and are finalizing our plans. I understand you want to know what we're going to do to fix this, but it is important for us to maintain a degree of discretion to prevent putting ourselves at a competitive disadvantage. I can tell you action will be taken in the coming weeks and months, be it around the trade deadline, the entry draft and/or free agency that will be indicative of our direction. Our goal as an organization is to build a team that wins consistently and competes for the Stanley Cup. Anything less is unacceptable! Everything we do in the coming weeks, months and years will be done to that end and everyone in our organization - myself, management, staff, coaches and players - will be held to that standard. The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed left wing Colton Gillies off waivers from the Minnesota Wild.

The 22-year-old Gillies, a first-round draft pick in 2007, had two assists and 10 penalty minutes in 37 games with Minnesota this season. He has three goals, seven assists and 30 penalty minutes in 89 career games with the Wild.
Last season, he had 11 goals and 15 assists in 64 games for Houston in the American Hockey League affiliate.
He played four seasons with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League and also scored a goal in seven games to help Canada win the gold medal in the 2008 world junior championships. While I have tremendous respect for Scott Howson and the rest of Columbus’ management team, the situation regarding Derick Brassard has become untenable. This coach has a history of burying players and using them as scapegoats to mask his own lack of success on the ice. According to the team, he was at a doctor's appointment. Last Saturday, Canucks coach Alain Vigneault told the media, "Manny has been officially cleared to play." However, on Tuesday GM Mike Gillis was singing a different tune.
"This has been a day-to-day thing all along," Gillis said. "He hasn't been cleared to play yet, he's been cleared for some contact, and he gets monitored every day." Many believed with Vigneault's announcement over the weekend that Malhotra would be in the lineup for Game 1; however, now it's looking more like a fourth line of Jeff Tambellini, Alexandre Bolduc and Victor Oreskovich will go Wednesday night at Rogers Arena. Malhotra has been out of action since March 16 when he was struck in the eye by a deflected puck. He underwent two separate surgeries on the eye and has one more to go, which will happen in the offseason. The 31-year-old Mississauga native had 11 goals and 30 points in 72 games while leading all Canucks centers with 61.7 percent in the faceoff circle.

Several fans in Nationwide Arena's section 109 tonight said NHL referee Paul Devorski made a "crying face" and an obscene gesture during the third period of the Blue Jackets' 4-3 shootout win over the Wild.

NHL director of officiating Terry Gregson confirmed to The Dispatch this morning that the league is investigating the matter.
Devorski, in a late-night email exchange with The Dispatch, denied the allegations but would make no further public comment. NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell had no comment when contacted by The Dispatch.
Roughly 15 fans seated in or around the area sent emails or Twitter messages to The Dispatch shortly after the incident, which occurred during a stoppage in play. Blue Jackets fans were giving Devorski grief for what they thought was a missed highstick by a Wild player to the face of Jackets captain Rick Nash. "Two guys in front of us started giving the refs (grief) after they clearly missed a call," said Ritter Hoy, who was seated five rows up from the glass in section 109. "Happens at every game, right? "Well, the No. 10 official put his fingers up and rubbed his eyes and made a crying face, like 'what are you going to do, cry?' They started giving him more (grief) and he put his middle finger up to his chin and acted like he was scratching his face. It was very, very blatant. The whole section saw it and went crazy." No. 10 is Devorski, a 21-year NHL official who is one of the most respected officials in the business. Devorski has worked Stanley Cups since the 2001 season and the last two Olympics, including the bronze medal game in 2010 and the gold medal game in 2006. This would seem out of his character. The crowd's reaction last night was audible, even from the press box. I heard it and so did the two traveling writers who cover the Wild, but the reason for the disturbance was not immediately clear. Fans were on edge most of the night, because the Wild had seven power plays, while the Blue Jackets had none. "I have to say the guys who were two rows in front of us were kind of provoking him," Hoy said. "They were pretty much provoking him. But he has to be used to that kind of stuff, right? He can't go there, can he? "They sent an usher down to see what the disturbance was all about." Samuel Costello and Jed Kinderknecht both were seated in row D of section 109. "The ref made the crying motion and then gave a disguised middle finger," Costello said. "I actually thought it was kind of funny. I have sat in those seats for over five years and have never seen an official engage fans like that."
Kinderknecht said he didn't see Devorski scratch his chin with his middle finger, perhaps because he looked away to see other fans' reactions to the "crying face."
"(Devorski) was resting his arm on the goal and he was facing the fans," Kinderknecht said. "He wasn't hiding his face or trying to mask his gesture. I remember being surprised because I have never seen a professional ref respond to the fans like that."

In his new role, Hitchcock will assist in the evaluation of the organization’s personnel playing in college and in major junior hockey in the Canadian Hockey League. He also will work with the coaching staff of the Springfield Falcons, the Jackets’ AHL affiliate, and evaluate prospects playing there, as well as scout NHL and AHL games. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Boll will earn $700,000 US in 2010-11 and $750,000 in 2011-12.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have fired former interim head coach Claude Noel assistants Gary Agnew and Gord Murphy and strength and conditioning coach Barry Brennan.

The team announced the moves Tuesday.
Scott Arniel, hired last week as the club's new head coach, will get to start fresh with a new staff.
Noel led the team to a 10-8-6 mark after Ken Hitchcock was fired on Feb. 3. He had been with the club for three seasons.
Agnew had also served as an interim coach for the Blue Jackets in November of 2006, and was with the team for four years.
Murphy had been on the coaching staff since July of 2002.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting Manitoba Coach Scott Arniel has been hired for the same job with the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets scheduled a press conference for Tuesday to announce their new coach, but declined comment when asked by The Associated Press about the hiring on Monday night.
The Dispatch, citing unidentified sources, reported on its website that Arniel had accepted the job. All I have to say is I hope he is up for a challenge since Howsen traded away our good players.

The owners -- if you believe them -- ARE losing money, hand over first. I truly don't think it's an ownership problem. Look at the contract extensions they've doled out to Nash, Vermette, Brassard. Mason and Voracek can be extended this season. Yes, it's a small market. Yes, they're a budget team, not a cap team. But they footed the bill for a club that was expected to win this season, and now it hasn't won. I wouldn't put that on ownership. I'd put it on the GM, the coaches and players. When Mason and Voracek get extension, and they reshuffle the deck this summer, the CBJ will be in the $52M-55M range. That should be enough for a very good hockey, especially with so many young players.

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars forward James Neal two games for a boarding infraction that injured the Columbus Blue Jackets' Derek Dorsett.
The NHL announced the discipline on Friday. Neal will miss games against New Jersey on Saturday and Carolina on Monday.
Neal also will forfeit $8,515 in salary, with the money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

General manager Scott Howson announced the deal Thursday. LaVallee-Smotherman was assigned to the club's American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.
The 23-year-old LaVallee-Smotherman was Atlanta's fifth pick, 116th overall, in the 2005 draft.
He has one goal and one assist in four career NHL games with the Thrashers and has spent most of the past three seasons playing with the AHL's Chicago Wolves.

Detroit will win if... It doesn't get flustered. Too often, good goalies seem to get in the head of the Red Wings, who like to make the pretty play and score the fancy goal. Mason has shown the ability to stone even the most offensive of teams, so the Red Wings can't lose their composure if the rookie steals a period, or even a game. The Red Wings have the talent and the tenacity to break through against any team -- as long as they stick with the game plan that has served them so well during the regular season.

Columbus will win if... They do everything absolutely right. It's no big secret to say that the Blue Jackets will have to be at the top of their game in order to solve the defending Cup champion. But Hitchcock has a way of making his team's play close-to-perfect hockey. For this team, it means getting consistent scoring from a line other than Nash's, killing power plays effectively and scoring on their own power play more often than once every blue moon. If they can do all that -- and Mason is on his game -- the Jackets have a puncher's chance here.
